CHINA, YUNNAN SHAOLIN TEMPLE
Welcome to train with us inside the Official Shaolin Temple located in Kunming, South of China in Yunnan Province.
WHY CHOSE TO TRAIN IN YUNNAN SHAOLIN TEMPLE?
Shaolin Temple is known around the world about the rich culture of Chan (Meditation and Buddhist studies), Wu (Martial Arts) and Yi (Chinese Traditional Medicine). You will train with authentic Shaolin Warrior Monks who will teach you a variety of Shaolin style forms, applications and underline basics of Kung Fu. Apart of Kung Fu, you will also be able to learn in a fully immersed environment Chinese Culture such Buddhism, Chinese Traditional Medicine, Chinese Mandarin, Calligraphy so on.
The Shaolin Temple complex consists of four Temples: Mioazhan, Fa’ding, Tuzhu and Guanyin. Miaozhan was build during Yuan Dynasty in 1290. In 2008, Guandu Ancient town made an agreement with the Songshan Shaolin Temple to open the Guandu Temples as Shaolin Temple.
Fa’ding Temple was build around the year 756 (Nanzhao Kingdom Period) and being renovated during Guanxu Period of the Qing Dynasty. The Temple consists of several Halls: Main Hall (shrine of Mahakaya), Side Hall, Wing Rooms and The Gate. The side and wing rooms are shrines of Buddhist and Taoist deities such as Goddess of Mercy, God of Fortune and the General Yue Fei from the Song Dynasty.
Tuzhu Temple was build between 738-937 in the Nanzhao Kingdom Period. The Temple serves as the shrine for deity Mahakaya (Da Hei Tian Shen). Mahakaya was Siva in Brahmanism in Ancient India. Tuzhu means “Patron God” by the locals.
In the main square there is Jingang Pagoda, the oldest of its kind in China. The purpose of this pagoda is to vanquish the local devil Luo Si Guai and was build in 1457.
Shaolin Temple Yunnan is located in Kunming, the City of Eternal Spring. The city is located at the edge of the Lake Dian and surrounded by Temples and lakes and limestone landscapes. The weather is excellent throughout the year which makes Shaolin Temple Yunnan the ideal place to train Kung Fu all year around.
Experience the ultimate Shaolin Monk Kung Fu lifestyle! We live inside the Shaolin Temple in the same way Shaolin monks used to live for more than 1500 years. Yunnan is the best Province of China in terms of excellent air and food quality. You will have a unique experience which will push you out of your comfort zone. The accommodation consists of shared, family and single monk rooms with shared washing facility. We have WiFi on the Temple grounds. In the laundry area we have two automatic washing machines. If you wish to live in a single monk room, please book a long time in advance due to limited availability.
What is included: bedding, linen, towel, WiFi and the use of washing machines. What is not included: toiletries, washing powder, extra linen and extra towels.
ACTIVITIES IN THE SHAOLIN TEMPLE YUNNAN
We offer a very rich environment for immersing yourself in learning theory classes such as: Chinese Mandarin, Buddhism, Calligraphy (including Chinese modern writing) and Chinese Culture. We wish to make sure that you have a real and full traditional Chinese Culture experience together with the monks from the Shaolin Temple. You can interact with the monks and take part in the Buddhist traditions and ceremonies on a daily basis.
Important: Please be aware that our regular Kung Fu timetable includes only 4 hours of theory classes per week which are: 2 hours of Mandarin, 1 hour Chinese Traditional Medicine and 1 hour of Chinese Culture. For Mandarin classes we follow the HSK Curriculum. Chinese Traditional Medicine includes topics on: Yin and Yang Theory, 5 Elements Theory, Acupuncture (Moxibustion), Cupping, Gua Sha (Scrapping), Nutrition Theory, Tuina (Qigong and massage), Herbal Medicine so on. Please note that if you stay for short period of time, some of the topics may not be scheduled. A wider range of topics are available for long term students.
In order to avoid issues during your study period, please make sure you clarify upfront with us all you wish to learn in the theory classes.
No matter the length of study, if you want to study more theory classes (certain topics), you must ask us specifically. There will be cases when it will be possible to organize these extra classes and some cases when we cannot. However any extra classes apart from the 4 hours per week will have an additional fee.
If you are looking for the ultimate health experience, then look no further! We eat with the Shaolin monks in the dining hall. They have a 100% vegetarian/ vegan diet. However when you eat with the monks you must follow their eating habits and etiquette. This means their meals are at set timing: 7 am, 12 am and 6 pm, they do not talk during meal time and are very grateful for their bowl of food.
Here we teach students to take responsibility for their own health, to keep their promises and stick to them, and make them as natural as breathing air. We teach students to realize the meaning and value of their life!
The food provided follows the principles of Yin and Yang as well as eating for each organ – 5 Elements Theory. We do not cook using chemicals, enhancers and MSG (Mono-sodium Glutamate).
Yunnan province is one of the most beautiful Province in China. The climate is mild and the water abundant. The province is the most abundant in plant diversity. The direct border with Vietnam, Laos, Burma and Tibet, makes the food in Yunnan to be the ultimate foodie region.
All our dishes follow the principles of Food Therapy and our vegetarian dishes use herbs which you can find in the recipes of the Chinese Traditional Medicine formula.
We offer theory classes during the week: Mandarin (2h), Chinese Culture (1h) and includes Tea Ceremony, Calligraphy or topics about the culture, Chinese Traditional Medicine. During weekends there are classes on ancient instruments which students can take part but they are not part of our formal timetable.
TRAINING AND UNIFORM
We have class early morning – Morning Chanting Ceremony which starts at 5.30 am and lasts for one hour / sometimes for 2 hours depending an the Temple activities. The attendance is optional. You can attend this class on daily basis. We train for 7 hours as formal Kung Fu classes and we also have two Buddhist Ceremonies to attend (optional). Because many other schools copy our content, we will send the full timetable upon your formal application.
The Temple has a wide range of weapons and training equipment which can be used in your free time as well. We encourage the students to train in their free time or during the weekends.
Note: When you train in the Temple the uniform is compulsory. You are obliged to follow the school rules and regulations. You must respect the life of the monks and the Temple. The training uniform is composed of: Shaolin Grey uniform and T-shirt. The uniform is included in the application fee. If you wish to buy the Kung Fu shoes, there is an additional fee of 30 RMB.
PLACES OF INTEREST
Yunnan Province is considered the most beautiful Province of China. There are many famous places to visit while you train with us such: Lijiang (Snow Mountains and Traditional Wooden Houses), Shangri-La (mysterious land close to Tibet border), Pu’er (famous Pu’er Tea), Hani Rice Terraces (and border with Vietnam), Xishuangbanna (border with Laos and Myanmar with the wild jungle) and many more. The first Wonder of the world is only 60 km away from Shaolin Temple Yunnan – Shilin Stone Forest, an UNESCO Heritage Site. Apart of the famous landscape, you can also see the rich culture of the ethnic minorities which live on the land.
HOW TO FIND US
The nearest airport you can travel is Kunming International Airport. From the airport in Kunming you must get a local taxi to the Shaolin Temple in Guandu District.
