1. WHY SHOULD I STUDY KUNG FU IN CHINA?
There is not better place to learn authentic and traditional Kung Fu than its birth place China! Our Venue location is at the heart of Chinese Kung Fu with guaranteed fully qualified Masters.
2. WHY CHOOSE US?
We are the Official Kung Fu Department of the Shaolin Temple the Yunnan Province Branch. We live and train inside the Shaoilin Temple, haveing full interaction with the monks and the Venerable Abbot Grandmaster Shi Yanbei. The Head Monk of the Kung Fu Department is Shifu Yanjun. Shifu Shi Yanjun it is a top Shaolin Warrior famous Nationally and Internationally. His education, achievements and love for Kung Fu surpass many Chinese masters. We engage our students in helping the Temple. Some long students are also offered the opportunity (full or partial scholarship) to work directly with us doing translations while they train full time. In this way, we will bridge the gap between both cultures and languages. Students have the option to engage themselves in the life of Shaolin Temple by participating at Buddhist Ceremonies. Shaolin Temple regularly has cultural events therefore it will offer a more in depth cultural exchange. Our timetable is rich in content and tailored to students individual needs. We listen to our students in order to make sure we offer the best experience ever.
3. DO YOU NEED ANY PREVIOUS MARITAL EXPERIENCE BEFORE ARRIVAL?
You do not need previous martial experience in order to join us but you must be healthy physically and mentally. Yunnan Shaolin Temple offers classes all year around.
4. WHAT IS THE STANDARD LIKE IN CHINA?
China is a developing country. Many cities are very developed and the standard of living is similar with western countries.
5. HOW LONG CAN I STAY IN CHINA FOR?
Based on the Chinese Government regulations, you can stay and study in China for a period of 5 years. This rule can change in the future.
6. HOW CAN I CONTACT MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS?
You can contact your family via Internet, phone or post. We have Internet facilities in the Temple. You can use Facebook (a VPN is required) or chat facilities as well such as Skype, We chat, Whats app or Viber.
7. I DO NOT SPEAK CHINESE. IS THERE A PROBLEM FOR ME TO COMMUNICATE AND GO AROUND?
In China not many people speak English therefore you will need help. You can hire a guide to help. Another alternative is to use an app or have some sentences written in Chinese for guidance. At the Temple we have translators which can help you. Our translators speak English, French, Greek and Romanian.
8. CAN I CONTACT FORMER STUDENTS OF THE SCHOOL?

9. WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE IN CHINA?
Shaolin Temple is located in the best province of China – Yunnan – the best location to train Kung Fu all year around. Winter has min 15 degrees while summer has max 30 degrees. Yunnan Province is the most clean and there is no pollution. This means the food is mostly organic and plenty of variety. Please check the weather forecast before arrival or get in touch with us for information.
10. CAN I WORK WHILE IN CHINA?
Some of our students work as teachers, in Kung Fu shows or translators. You can teach English if you are native speaker or for non-native speakers if you hold a TEFL certificate (sometimes not needed) or have previous teaching experience. To be cast in movies /Kung Fu shows represents another earning money while in China – this option is available only for long term students or experienced ones.
11. CHINESE, FOREIGN HOLIDAYS AND SCHOOL BREAKS.
During the year, will be several Chinese and Foreign Holiday days. The Temple staff will often have breaks during these holidays, however students can train and use all the Academy equipment.
12. CAN I TAKE A HOLIDAY DURING MY TRAINING PERIOD?
If you wish to take a holiday during your training time, you can. If the period you wish to travel is more than 1 month, your training period will be stopped. However you cannot leave for longer than 6 months. If is longer, your contract will terminate. For holiday less than one month, the conditions above do not apply.
13. HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?
It all depends on what you would prefer to do while in China. You can keep a small budget if you spend less. It is difficult to give you an exact amount you should spend but a minimum of 100$/month will be required. Long term students which work hard and show great improvement will be cast in Chinese Kung Fu movies or Kung Fu shows. Note that extra services such as medical treatments, medicine, taxi, extra classes must be paid extra and are not included in the trip price. If you damage the school property you must pay for the damage. Visa renewal must be also considered.
Section 2: Specific Admission and Life at the Temple Topics
1. WHAT IS THE ADMISSION PROCEDURE LIKE?
If you are interested to join us, the first step is to forward to us an application fee of 150$. The application fee reserves you a place, covers the administration cost and a full set of Shaolin Uniform. It is non-refundable. The tuition must be paid by Bank transfer only after the visa is issued or cash on arrival. The payment policy can change at anytime, however you will be informed on how to pay the tuition. We accept RMB, US dollars, British pounds and Euro (the exchange rate on the day). Our discounted rates apply when the fee is paid in advance. 2. WHAT CONDITIONS APPLY FOR LONG TERM STUDENTS?
If you wish to book for one year or more, you must undertake a Probation period of 3 months. Shaolin Temple Yunnan is very serious place to train Traditional Kung Fu. We only accept highly motivated, honest and dedicated students. If you pass the probation period, than you will be offered the discounted rate for the whole year. The probation period is charged at the rate of 910$/ month (2730$) plus application fee of 150$. Upon passing the probation time, the following 9 months are charged at 3250$.
3. WHAT IS THE TEMPLE LIFESTYLE?
Students train inside the Shaolin Temple Yunnan. All meals are taken together with the monks in the Dining Hall – vegetarian option only. The monks of the Temple have many tasks to complete during the day, therefore it is best to ask before you would like to approach them. The living quarters and full training is taking place inside the Temple.
4. WHAT KIND OF VISA I MUST APPLY?
Long term students (even in probation time) will apply for X2 type Student Visa valid for 6 months. Some students should understand that the visa is due to the visa officer and they can refuse the X2 visa. In this case you can travel on 3 months Tourist Visa. If you join the short term program, you can travel to China on a Business / Tourist visa for 3 months or less. Depending on your country of birth, visa extension may be possible within the country. Failing this, a short trip to Hong Kong, Thailand, or surrounding countries maybe required for the application.
5. HOW ARE THE TEMPLE’S FACILITIES?
We offer full board during your stay in China. We offer sharing monks room and single monks room. All rooms are simple decorated – single occupancy room requires extra payment. All rooms have sharing washing facilities. We offer free Wi-Fi facility throughout the Temple. We have automatic machines on site which are free of charge.
6. HOW IS THE TRAINING TIMETABLE?
Kung Fu training depends on seasons, therefore the timetable can change from Summer to Winter. We know that each student has its own needs therefore we will do our best to tailor the timetable based on these specifics. Each class has about 5 to 7 students. There are classes such power training, endurance and Kung Fu basics when all students train together. Forms are taught individually or in very small group.
7. HOW DO I TRAVEL TO SHAOLIN TEMPLE?
You must travel to Kunming International Airport. From Kunming airport you must take a taxi to Shaolin Temple Yunnan and will cost between 80 – 120 RMB. If your flight arrives later than 7.00 pm, you must book a local hotel in the airport area and travel next morning to us. Shaolin Temple gates close officially for tourists at 6.30 pm and at 8.00 pm for students.
8. WHAT CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?
During training time, the uniform is compulsory and is included in the application fee. However you can purchase extra uniform for 180 RMB (Shaolin uniform, T-shirt, belt and elastics). Please note that outside clothing is not allowed during training time. For winter time is advisable to bring thermal clothing, fleece and warm jacket. You can buy clothes at a very good price while in China.
9. WILL I GET A CERTIFICATE AFTER I WILL FINISH THE TRAINING?
Every student who trained at the Temple will receive a certificate with the official stamp. In the certificate will be written your grades from the examination (on request). Additionally each student will receive a Certification from the Shaolin Temple with the official stamp. Please visit the page CERTIFICATIONS to see what other extra certifications you can achieve.
