Kung Fu Frequently Asked Questions

1. WHY SHOULD I STUDY KUNG FU IN CHINA?
You will learn authentic Shaolin Kung Fu inside the Original Shaolin Temple in Henan Province or Maitreya Temple in Yunnan Province from highly experienced Shaolin Warrior Monks. You will train your body and mind for more than 8 hours daily, learn Chinese Culture and language, participate at events & learn traditions which are more than 5000 years old. Our courses are tailored to your own needs.

2. DO YOU NEED ANY PREVIOUS MARITAL EXPERIENCE BEFORE ARRIVAL?
You do not need previous martial experience in order to join us but you must be healthy physically and mentally. You cannot book your classes for Taiji Quan, Meditation and Qigong in Shaolin Temple from November to April. For Maitreya Temple you can book classes all year around. We do not enroll students from November to April in Shaolin.

3. WHAT IS THE STANDARD LIKE IN CHINA?
China is a developing country. Many cities are very developed and the standard of living is similar with western countries. In our Academy we strive to offer the best from the living conditions and food to training. We listen to our students in order to make sure we offer the best experience ever.

4. HOW LONG CAN I STAY IN CHINA FOR?
The International Liaison Department of the Original Shaolin Temple has authorized us as ONLY one Martial Arts Academy training center to enroll students from other countries in China Shaolin Temple. If you would like to join us for long term you will travel on X2 visa valid for 6 months and extend it while in China. Some students should understand that the visa is due to the visa officer and they can refuse the X2 visa. In this case you can travel on 3 months tourist visa which we will renew in China. If you join the short term program, you can travel to China on a Business / Tourist visa for 3 months or less. For Maitreya Temple the same conditions apply.

5. HOW ARE THE ACADEMY’S FACILITIES?
No matter of the location, we offer full board during your stay in China. We offer 2 types of accommodation: hostel and hotel . The hostel accommodation is shared rooms and washing facilities. The room benefits from WI-FI for 100 rmb per month. The hotel will require additional fee per month. Each hotel room has free WI-FI and en suite bathroom. The AC (Shaolin Temple only) has an additional charge of 20 RMB/ day. We have two types of hotel rooms: twin and double bed. The twin room costs 10$/ day and the double room costs 15$/day.

6. HOW CAN I CONTACT MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS?
You can contact your family via Internet, phone or post. We have Internet facilities in the Academy. You can use Facebook (a VPN is required for the use of gmail) or chat facilities as well such as Skype, We chat or Viber.

7. WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE IN CHINA?
Shaolin Temple is located in Henan Province. From November until April due to very harsh weather conditions and pollution Shaolin Temple location is closed. During summer time is very hot with temperatures which can go up to 45 degrees. Most summers there is drought which makes it hard for cooking and proper hygiene. During autumn and spring is colder in the morning and evening while during the day is very nice and warm.

Maitreya Temple is location in the best province of China – Yunnan. The proximity to Mile City makes the Maitreya Temple the best location to train Kung Fu all year around. Winter has min 15 degrees while summer has max 32 degrees. Yunnan Province is the most clean and there is no pollution. This means the food is mostly organic and plenty of variety.

8. I DO NOT SPEAK CHINESE. IS THERE A PROBLEM FOR ME TO COMMUNICATE AND GO AROUND?
In China not many people speak English therefore you will need help. You can hire a guide to help you or you can have some sentences written in Chinese for guidance. At the Academy we have translators which can help you. Our translators speak English, French, Greek and Romanian.

9. CAN I CONTACT FORMER STUDENTS OF THE SCHOOL?

11. HOW DO I TRAVEL TO YOUR ACADEMY?
Usually students travel to Beijing, Shanghai or any major International Airport in China. Local airport is in Zhengzhou (Shaolin Temple) and Kunming (Maitreya Temple). In the Application fee we include the pick up from Zhengzhou (either airport, train or bus station) or Mile City. If you travel by train from Zhengzhou please note that there are two train stations. The easiest station for pick up is Zhengzhou Dong (East). If you travel by bus, the nearest bus station is in Dengfeng. 12. WHAT IS THE ADMISSION PROCEDURE LIKE?
If you are interested to join us, the first step is to send an application fee of 100$ (non-refundable but includes the pick up from the airport/ train station). The tuition can be paid by Bank transfer after the visa is issued or cash on arrival. We accept RMB, US dollars, British pounds and Euro (the exchange rate on the day). If you want to study for more than one month you must pay in advance, otherwise the discount does not apply. You can check additional information on the Kung Fu price page.

13. HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?
You will be required to pay the application fee (includes the pick up from Zhengzhou / Mile) and the tuition (includes accommodation, training and food). There is not any additional charge except for the WI-FI (Shaolin) and the uniform you will use for training. It all depends on what you would prefer to do while in China. You can keep a small budget if you spend less. Long term students which work hard and show great improvement will be cast in Chinese Kung Fu movies or Kung Fu shows. Note that extra services such as medical treatments, medicine, taxi, extra classes must be paid extra and are not included in the trip price. If you damage the school property you must pay for the damage.

14. CAN I WORK WHILE IN CHINA?
Some of our students work as teachers, in Kung Fu shows or translators. You can teach English if you are native speaker or for non-native speakers if you hold a TEFL certificate (sometimes not needed) or have previous teaching experience. To be cast in movies /Kung Fu shows represents another earning money while in China – this option is available only for long term students.

15. WHAT CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?
During training time the uniform is compulsory. You can purchase the uniform directly from the Academy for 200 RMB (includes the uniform, belt and elastics). There are additional options for uniforms which can be purchased from the Academy directly. Please note that outside clothing is not allowed during training time. Additional clothing to be purchased in the Academy for train purpose is: T-shirt, lose trousers and Kung Fu training shoes. For winter time is advisable to bring thermal clothing, fleece and warm jacket. You can buy clothes at a very good price while in China.

16. WILL I GET A CERTIFICATE AFTER I WILL FINISH THE TRAINING?
Every student who trained in our Academy for at least one month will receive a certificate with the official stamp. In the certificate will be written your grades from the examination (on request). The Academy is certified by the Chinese Government. We offer 3 types of Certificates from the Academy: Certificate of Completion of the Training, Degree Certificate and Master Certificate. If you are already a Master and wish to grade in Shaolin, we will organize examination for Shaolin Duanwei Grading (this certificate if from the Chinese Shaolin Wushu Association).
